Need vent that food doesn’t fall in

Post by bylandorriver » Fri Sep 07, 2018 6:53 am

Hey there!

I just bought a house a year ago, so I am chipping away at projects (thank you so much for the help Shannon!). I have floor vent that is at my feet when standing at the sink. The edge of the vent also sits under one of the dishwasher feet (see attached pictures). It is very inconvenient and I would like to install a vent that has a little bit of a 90 degree facing away from the cabinets, as well as get out from under the foot of the dishwasher. Ultimately, it needs to be a very custom vent cover. Can someone tell me how to acquire such an item with money or diy? Or, is there another suggestion to fix the problem?

If you have access can you run it over to the kick area of the cabinet and install it in the face of the kick? You will then have to patch the floor which is a whole other issue of course.

Relocating the vent will be your best option. Any form of "deflector" is still going to be a toe grabber or catch falling debris.

Agreed, and now that I look at it, the opening is where the dishwasher is (will be ?)

By kick area of the cabinet, you mean move it left as seen in the picture? I don’t think there are any obstructions below the floor, so yes, I think. I would just need to extend the ducting below, I think and repair the floor like you said, which the floors were just laid and I have scraps leftover, so that may be convenient.

To the other question, the dishwasher does sit on the back right of the vent as shown in the picture.

It seems that if I can move the hole in the floor, I can use the vent mentioned on Amazon.

What about moving the vent back under the cabinet and have it come through the face of the toe-kick on the cabinet? This gets it out of the way and positioned so stuff can't drop into it.

Ah, I think this is what Shannon was suggesting in the first comment...that does sound really good. I will have to take a look in the basement (which is unfinished thankfully) and see if that is feasible. Still, I think I will have to extend the ducting, which I may need to look up a video on. I will take a look when I get home later.

Yes I would move it to the kick of the cabinet instead of in the floor
