Can I get away with 2x8's for my deck?

Post by jeb101 » Fri Sep 14, 2018 7:26 am

I am building a small floating deck tomorrow and getting lumber shortly. I was wondering if I could get away by using 2x8's or I should go for 2x10's like originally planned. Basically because the pressure treated 8's are on serious discount, but I'm not about to cut safety.

Deck is going to be pretty straight forward and easy to build, it'll be 16ft long, 3-3.5ft wide, and the floor will be running down the length, so the supports spread at 16 inch will be no more than lets say absolute max 4ft long.

Deck will be on compacted earth, with deck blocks, 3 on each side, so there wouldn't be a span of more than ~8ft before there is a support.

Would 2x8's be OK or should I keep with the planned 10's?

Cheers

Ok so is this 3 to 3.5 ft wide or 33.5 ft wide? Was that a typo?

As I read it again I believe you did mean 3-3.5ft? This is a pretty narrow deck but anyways you will be fine. A few more deck blocks and you could use 2x6sAs

As I understand you will have no beams and only the blocks under the outer 16' rims and joists every 16" spanning basically 3-3.5 ft between the two rims. If this is correct you could use 2x6 and have 5 blocks per side.

Thanks for the quick reply, I am just doing a narrow deck for the front of the house, small entry, enough for 2 chairs and a mini table. Now that I think of it, 4ft is more what I am looking at. I was thinking of putting the decking length wise, so I'd have ~16 joists spanning the length, and just lay, ideally uncut decking on top.

Here is a rough mock-up of what I was planning. Also, you mention 5 blocks per side, is that still the case with this mock-up?

Three per second de if using 2x8 and five per side if using 2x6
