So ideally there should be step flashing at every row of shingles butting into that wall. I cant tell from the pictures if you can get the upper edge of step flashing pieces under the board and button siding but that would be best. Alternatively if the siding is to high to do that You can install step flashing and then add a second flat flashing that fits under the siding but extends over the step flashing to direct water over it.

What you have there now IMO is just a asking for potential leaks because that depends on a tar seal to keep water out from under shingles.
