Is my upstairs plumbing leaking down to floor below?

Post by megadude » Thu Jun 06, 2019 6:53 pm

Hi.
Today I ran the sink upstairs and when I went down to basement I could hear dripping sound. I can also hear when it standing on my main floor just above where I heard it in basement.

Here is a video showing what I mean. Pretty sure it's a dripping sound not just pipes making sounds?

If it is leaking, I suppose I have to hire someone to take out the bathroom vanity and sink and go behind the wall?

Thanks for the advice.

The problem is that the leak could be anywhere between the sink and that vertical wall. Would that sink be right above the wall? What I mean is would the drain pipe exist the vanity back , go into the wall and then straight down that wall on main floor?

I would likely start by cutting an inspection hole in the drywall under the vanity. By the looks of it on video you can do that without removing vanity.

I'm not much of a handyman but it looks like it does to me. Here is a pic.

Good luck. If you're only getting the drips from your bathroom sink, at least that may narrow the problem somewhat.

Actually that is a good question Aaron.
Megadude are you getting that same sound if you run the tub/shower or flush the toilet?

No sound for anything else.

Funny enough, today I did the same thing as yesterday, a few times, and the dripping is not as loud and doesn't last as long. I even ran the sink for two minutes and went to basement and it dripped only five times and not quite as loud.

Regardless, it's something I have to deal with.
